In the context of Water purification, ion-exchange is a rapid and reversible process in which impurity ions present in the Water are replaced by ions released by an ion-exchange resin. The impurity ions are taken up by the resin, which must be periodically regenerated to restore it to the original ionic form

A demineralization water system produces mineral free water by operating on the principles of ion exchange, degasification, and polishing. Demineralised water system finds wide application in the field of steam, power, process, and cooling. The impurity ions are taken up by the resin, which must be periodically regenerated to restore it to the original ionic form.

Principle

Raw Water is passed via two small polystyrene bead-filled (ion exchange resins) beds. While the captions get exchanged with hydrogen ions in the first bed, the anions are exchanged with hydroxyl ions, in the second one.

Process

In DM plant, the demineralization process utilizes acid regenerated cation resin & caustic regenerated anion resin to remove minerals from water. In cation shell  calcium (Ca++), magnesium (Mg++), iron (Fe+++), manganese (Mn++), sodium (Na+) and hydrogen (H+) ions are removed from the water. In ANION SHELL remove Chlorides (Cl-), Sulfates (SO4), Nitrates (NO3), Carbonate (CO3), Silica (SiO2-), Hydroxyl (OH-) ions are removing from water. Then water passed to MIXED SHELL. In Mixed bed shells, both cation and anion resin is present which mainly used in the water purification industry for polishing process water to achieve demineralized water quality.
